- August 04, 2026, 10:58:28 AMWhen starting Pokémon Sword and Shield, I think one of the biggest mistakes is assuming that you need to immediately build a perfectly optimized team. The early part of the Galar region provides several useful Pokémon that can carry their weight for a long time, and the best choice depends heavily on what your starter is and which types you want to cover. Rookidee is one of my favorite early catches because it eventually develops into Corviknight, giving the team a reliable Flying/Steel option. Yamper can also be useful for players who want an early Electric-type, particularly because its evolution provides a different style of offensive utility. Chewtle is another interesting option for players looking for a Water-type, while Blipbug can eventually become Orbeetle and offer a surprisingly useful Bug/Psychic combination. There are also early Normal-types and other Pokémon that may not look spectacular at first but can be perfectly competent during the story. Personally, I would prioritize type coverage, Pokémon you actually enjoy using, and evolutionary potential rather than simply choosing whatever has the highest early-game stats. One of the fun things about Sword and Shield is that the Wild Area gives players considerable freedom to experiment, so the "best" early Pokémon can easily be different for every trainer.
