Since Legends: Z-A changes the traditional Pokémon battle formula and places the adventure within Lumiose City, the experience encourages players to think differently from older games where the next route often determined the obvious additions to the team. Early on, I would personally prioritize Pokémon that provide useful type coverage, have evolutions worth investing in, and fit the player's preferred combat style. Pokémon that can attack from different ranges or take advantage of the game's real-time battle mechanics can be particularly interesting because simply having a high base stat isn't the only consideration anymore. I also think players should avoid worrying too much about creating the perfect team during the opening hours. One of the enjoyable aspects of a Pokémon game is discovering an unexpected favorite and then deciding to keep it even if another Pokémon might technically be stronger. Legends: Z-A also gives Mega Evolution an important role, which makes the long-term potential of certain Pokémon particularly interesting. My preferred approach would therefore be to catch a reasonably diverse group early, experiment with them, and gradually replace members as I discover what works. A Pokémon that initially seems mediocre can become extremely useful once its evolution, moves, or battle mechanics become available. In other words, the best early Pokémon isn't necessarily the strongest creature you can obtain immediately; it is the one that makes you want to continue exploring with it.
