I think the growing interest in digital detoxes is partly a reaction to the realization that being constantly connected doesn't necessarily make people feel more connected. Smartphones have turned the internet from something people deliberately visited into something that follows them everywhere, from the moment they wake up until they go to sleep. A person can check messages while eating breakfast, scroll social media while waiting for transportation, watch videos during a break, read notifications during a conversation, and then continue using the phone in bed. None of these individual behaviors necessarily seems dramatic, but together they can create the feeling that there is never a genuine pause. I think this is why digital detoxes have become attractive: people aren't necessarily trying to reject technology; they are trying to regain the ability to choose when technology gets their attention. There is also a psychological difference between actively deciding to watch something and automatically opening an app because you're bored for thirty seconds. Algorithms are extremely good at providing another piece of content immediately, so boredom rarely has the opportunity to develop into something else. Ironically, boredom can sometimes be useful because it gives people space to think, notice their surroundings, or come up with ideas. Digital detoxes therefore appeal to people who feel that their attention is constantly being fragmented. I don't think everyone needs to throw their smartphone away for a week, though. A more realistic interpretation of a digital detox might simply be having certain periods where notifications are ignored, eating without a screen, spending time outdoors without constantly documenting it, or having a few hours where entertainment isn't delivered through a device. The interesting thing is that the goal isn't necessarily less technology; it is more intentional technology use. In a world where digital entertainment is essentially unlimited, deliberately choosing not to consume something can itself feel like a form of freedom.

Why are people increasingly interested in digital detoxes?
