When people talk about Madhouse during the 1990s, it is difficult not to notice how much variety the studio managed to produce. My personal five picks for the most definitive examples of Madhouse's 1990s identity would be Cardcaptor Sakura, Trigun, Perfect Blue, Ninja Scroll, and Master Keaton. Each represents a different side of what Madhouse could accomplish. Cardcaptor Sakura demonstrates the studio's ability to create beautiful character animation and a warm fantasy atmosphere, while Trigun combines comedy, action, science fiction, and surprisingly thoughtful themes. Perfect Blue shows a completely different side, using psychological storytelling and unsettling imagery to create a film that feels far more mature than the average animated production of its era. Ninja Scroll represents the studio's willingness to embrace intense action and darker fantasy, while Master Keaton demonstrates how compelling a quieter, intelligent adventure series can be. What makes these productions particularly interesting to me is that they don't feel like five versions of the same formula. They show Madhouse experimenting with romance, comedy, psychological horror, action, mystery, and character-driven storytelling. Looking back, the 1990s almost feel like a period when Madhouse was quietly building a reputation for taking unusual ideas seriously, which helps explain why the studio became such an important name in anime history.
