Recent seasonal discussions have included exactly this sort of competitive ranking culture.
There is also a growing appreciation for characters who are not traditionally "perfect." A character can be selfish, awkward, overly dramatic, socially strange, stubborn, or simply terrible at communicating and still become extremely popular because viewers find them entertaining or relatable.
That is one reason anime discussions can continue long after an episode finishes. A plot may be forgotten after a few weeks, but a memorable character can remain a topic for years.
