How Can You Make Better Decisions During Battles in Baldur's Gate 3

One of the most interesting gameplay questions in Baldur's Gate 3 is how players can improve their decision-making during turn-based combat. The game offers so many possible actions that beginners can become overwhelmed by the number of choices available. The strongest move is not always the one that causes the most immediate damage.

One useful habit is to think about the entire battlefield before making the first major action. Players should look at enemy positions, high ground, environmental objects, nearby allies, and possible escape routes. A few seconds of observation can reveal opportunities that are easy to miss when immediately focusing on an enemy's health bar.

Positioning is particularly important. A character standing in a favorable location may gain advantages that make an attack considerably more effective, while an exposed character can become an easy target. Moving before attacking can therefore sometimes be more valuable than squeezing out a few additional points of damage.

The environment is another major part of combat. Fire, explosives, surfaces, elevation, doors, objects, and other environmental features can influence encounters. Players who experiment with the environment may discover solutions that are not obvious from the character's normal abilities.

Action economy is also important. Every turn provides limited opportunities, so players should consider how each action contributes to the overall situation. Sometimes using an ability that controls an enemy is more valuable than dealing damage because it prevents that enemy from taking a dangerous turn.

Target selection deserves similar attention. The enemy with the largest health bar is not necessarily the most important target. A weaker enemy capable of applying a powerful effect may deserve attention first, while a dangerous opponent might be better handled through crowd control rather than direct attacks.

Another useful strategy is accepting that not every turn needs to be spectacular. A defensive action, repositioning maneuver, setup ability, or support spell can create a much stronger situation for the following turn.

This is what makes Baldur's Gate 3 particularly interesting from a gameplay perspective. The game rewards players who think about relationships between actions rather than simply selecting the strongest attack available.

Eventually, experienced players begin to see combat as a puzzle. Instead of asking, "How can I deal the most damage this turn?" they ask, "How can I make the battlefield more favorable?" That small change in thinking can make difficult encounters considerably more manageable while also revealing how much freedom the game's combat system provides.
