GEN X (Born ~1965–1980) Age group: 45–60 years | The "Strategic and Classic" Generation

Why they play: Strategic thinking and world-building appeal to Gen X's analytical mindset.

They enjoy turn-based pacing that fits flexible schedules.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom / Skyrim (Console, PC)

Many Gen X players grew up on Nintendo and find comfort in its enduring charm.

World of Warcraft / Final Fantasy XIV (PC)

Why they play: Social connection and nostalgia from early MMORPG days.

Gen X loves long-term goals and structured online communities.

Card and Puzzle Games (Solitaire, .://chess.com , Wordscapes)

I think the idea that Generation X plays one particular type of game is increasingly outdated because people who grew up during the early home-console and arcade eras have had decades to develop very different gaming tastes. A Gen X player might enjoy modern open-world games such as Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, The Elder Scrolls, or The Legend of Zelda, while another might still prefer classic arcade games, fighting games, strategy games, simulations, or traditional RPGs. What I find particularly interesting is that many Gen X gamers have experienced practically every major transition in gaming: arcades, Atari-era home consoles, Nintendo and Sega, the rise of PlayStation, PC gaming, online multiplayer, handheld systems, smartphones, and today's live-service games. That means their preferences aren't necessarily based on nostalgia alone. Someone who played Street Fighter II decades ago might happily play a modern fighting game, while someone who spent years playing Civilization might naturally gravitate toward today's strategy titles. Others may have little interest in competitive gaming but enjoy relaxing games that can be played at their own pace.

I also think Gen X has an interesting relationship with difficulty. Some players from that generation grew up with games that offered very little guidance, limited saving, and sometimes brutally difficult progression, so modern accessibility features may be welcomed rather than criticized. At the same time, many older gamers aren't interested in proving that they can endure unnecessary frustration; they simply want a well-designed experience. This can explain why games with strong atmosphere, exploration, storytelling, and satisfying mechanics can appeal across generations. A Gen X player might enjoy Minecraft with the same enthusiasm as someone younger, or become fascinated by an indie game that reminds them of an old-school title while adding modern conveniences. In my opinion, the most accurate answer to "What games do Gen X play?" is therefore "almost anything." Their generation is old enough to have nostalgic connections to classic gaming but young enough to have experienced the entire evolution of modern gaming firsthand, making Gen X one of the most diverse gaming generations rather than a group with one predictable preference.
