Elden Ring: If you can't beat Margit — Are you actually underleveled?

One of the first major walls many players encounter in Elden Ring is Margit, the Fell Omen. He appears early enough that players can easily assume they are supposed to defeat him immediately, yet the fight can feel dramatically harder than almost everything encountered before him. This creates a common question: "Am I playing badly, or am I simply fighting him too early?"

The interesting thing about Margit is that the game does not require you to defeat him immediately. The open-world structure is deliberately designed to let players leave the area, explore Limgrave, discover caves and catacombs, collect better equipment, improve their character, and return later. If Margit is destroying you in only a few attacks, that can be a sign that exploring elsewhere would be more productive than repeatedly throwing yourself against the same boss.

One particularly useful early discovery is that Margit can be made considerably easier with the Margit's Shackle item. It can be obtained from Patches, who can be encountered in Murkwater Cave. The item is not simply a damage-dealing weapon; it temporarily restrains Margit and can create valuable opportunities during the fight.

Summoning is another option. Elden Ring gives players several ways to obtain assistance, including Spirit Ashes and online co-op. Spirit Ashes can be particularly useful because they give Margit another target to focus on. Even a relatively weak summon can create opportunities for healing, attacking from behind, or recovering after making a mistake.

Another common mistake is concentrating too heavily on attacking. Margit is designed to punish players who become greedy. His delayed attacks can make players panic because they expect him to swing immediately after raising his weapon. Learning to wait for the actual attack rather than reacting to the initial animation is one of the most important lessons this fight teaches.

Exploration can also solve the problem more effectively than simply grinding levels. Finding weapon upgrades, better armor, useful talismans, flask improvements, and additional healing charges can make a substantial difference. The game's progression system means that "being stuck" at a boss does not necessarily mean you need to master the boss immediately.

So if Margit feels impossible, the answer may not be "get better at Elden Ring." It may simply be "go somewhere else for a while." One of the game's biggest lessons is that getting stuck can itself be a signal to explore.
