The Final Eclipse: My Dramatic Fan Prediction for How Berserk Could End

As a fan of Berserk, I think the hardest thing about imagining its ending is deciding what kind of victory Guts could realistically achieve. Berserk has never been a story where defeating one enemy automatically fixes everything. The world itself is broken. Griffith has become almost impossible to reach as a normal human being, the God Hand exist beyond ordinary concepts of power, and Guts has spent most of his life paying an enormous price simply for continuing to move forward.

So, if I were inventing my own ending, I would make the conclusion extremely dramatic. Guts would finally confront Griffith, but the final battle would not simply be "Guts versus Griffith." It would become a confrontation involving the entire history of the Band of the Hawk, the God Hand, the Idea of Evil-like forces surrounding the world, and the question that has followed Guts since the Eclipse: can a person break free from a fate that seems to have already been written?

My imagined ending begins with the world approaching another enormous supernatural catastrophe.

The boundary between the human world and the astral world would become increasingly unstable. Strange creatures would appear more frequently, ordinary landscapes would become distorted, and entire regions would begin experiencing supernatural phenomena. Griffith's empire would initially appear to be the only force capable of protecting humanity, but gradually it would become obvious that his victory has a hidden cost.

Griffith would not simply want to rule humanity. He would want to create a world in which his dream is finally complete.

That would include eliminating the unpredictability of human existence itself.

This is where I would bring several characters back into the central conflict.

Rickert, Silat, Daiba, Luca's surviving allies, the Kushan forces, and the remnants of various human groups would begin realizing that Griffith's new world is not truly freedom. Rickert would become one of the most important leaders of the resistance because he understands Griffith better than almost anyone who survived the Eclipse.

Rickert's greatest contribution would not be his weapons or technology. It would be his refusal to worship Griffith.

He would tell the resistance that Griffith's greatest weakness is the same thing that makes him powerful: Griffith believes that everything can eventually be incorporated into his dream.

Guts, meanwhile, would be in an extremely dangerous condition.

The Berserker Armor would have pushed him farther than ever before. Schierke would become increasingly worried that Guts is losing the ability to distinguish between fighting for Casca and simply fighting because rage has become his identity.

This would become the emotional center of the final act.

Guts would finally understand that the armor has never truly made him stronger.

It has only allowed him to spend more of himself.

Casca would play a much more active role than simply being someone Guts protects. Her memories of the Band of the Hawk, Griffith, Guts, and the Eclipse would become crucial to understanding the supernatural situation surrounding them.

Farnese would also become essential.

Rather than remaining primarily a religious or magical character, Farnese would become one of the people capable of coordinating ordinary humans during the final crisis. Serpico would remain beside her, while Isidro would grow into a genuine warrior rather than merely a talented young fighter.

Isma and Azan would also contribute to the defense of the remaining human communities.

Schierke would realize something terrifying: the final confrontation cannot be won through physical strength alone.

The God Hand are not simply monsters standing in a room waiting to be killed.

Their power depends upon the relationship between human desire, sacrifice, causality, and the supernatural world.

Therefore, Guts' final objective would not be to overpower the entire God Hand.

It would be to destroy the mechanism that allows Griffith to exist as the absolute expression of his dream.

This leads to the final journey.

Guts, Casca, Schierke, Farnese, Serpico, Isidro, Rickert, and several other allies would travel toward the location where the boundaries between worlds have become weakest.

Along the way, they would encounter remnants of the old Band of the Hawk.

Zodd would eventually appear.

But instead of immediately fighting Guts, Zodd would reveal that Griffith has changed even beyond what he expected.

Zodd has always admired strength, but he would begin realizing that Griffith no longer represents the warrior who once inspired him.

The Griffith he followed possessed ambition.

The new Griffith possesses something closer to absolute control.

That distinction would finally cause Zodd to question his loyalty.

I imagine Zodd's final decision would be one of the most spectacular moments in the story.

He would turn against Griffith.

Not because he suddenly becomes a hero, but because he realizes that Griffith's perfect world leaves no place for warriors who choose their own path.

Zodd would fight Griffith's forces while Guts proceeds toward Griffith.

At the same time, Rickert and Silat would lead a massive assault against Griffith's human forces.

Daiba would use his knowledge of magic and astral phenomena to disrupt the supernatural defenses surrounding the city.

This would create chaos on an enormous scale.

Then Guts would finally meet Griffith.

There would be no immediate attack.

For the first time in years, Guts would simply look at him.

Griffith would tell Guts that everything he created came from the dream he once shared with his comrades.

Guts would respond that Griffith stopped caring about his comrades the moment he decided their lives were acceptable sacrifices.

Griffith would argue that sacrifice was necessary.

Guts would reject the entire concept.

That would be the philosophical climax.

Griffith believes that people can be used to achieve a greater dream.

Guts believes that no dream makes another person's life worthless.

The battle would finally begin.

It would be enormous.

Zodd would fight Griffith's strongest warriors. Schierke and Farnese would attempt to maintain the boundary between worlds. Serpico and Isidro would protect Casca. Rickert would fight alongside the resistance.

Guts would activate the Berserker Armor.

But this time, something would be different.

Casca would call his name.

Guts would hear her.

Instead of allowing the armor to consume him completely, he would deliberately remove himself from the rage.

That would be his true victory.

Not defeating Griffith.

Not killing the strongest monster.

But proving that the Beast of Darkness does not control him.

Guts would then fight Griffith as himself.

The battle would become increasingly brutal. Guts would lose his sword, suffer devastating injuries, and eventually be pushed to the point where victory seems impossible.

Then Griffith would make the mistake that Guts has been waiting for.

He would underestimate human attachment.

Griffith would assume that Guts is fighting because of hatred.

But Guts would tell him that he is fighting because he wants Casca and his friends to live.

That distinction would weaken Griffith's understanding of him.

Guts would not defeat Griffith through superior strength.

Instead, Casca, Schierke, and the others would help sever Griffith's connection to the supernatural structure supporting his existence.

For one moment, Griffith would become vulnerable.

Zodd would deliver the opening.

Guts would deliver the final blow.

But even then, I would not have Guts simply kill Griffith.

Instead, Griffith would finally experience something he has avoided throughout the entire story: helplessness.

His dream would collapse around him.

The magnificent kingdom he created would begin disappearing.

The supernatural army would lose its purpose.

The God Hand would retreat into the collapsing astral realm.

Griffith would look at Guts and realize that Guts has achieved something Griffith never could.

Guts had lost almost everything and still found reasons to care about other people.

Griffith had gained almost everything and ultimately lost his ability to live as an ordinary human being.

The final scene would be Guts walking away with Casca.

His sword would be damaged.

The Berserker Armor would be abandoned.

He would still be wounded and far from normal.

But he would no longer be walking toward another battle.

Zodd, wounded but alive, would disappear into the wilderness.

Rickert would help rebuild human settlements.

Farnese and Schierke would continue studying the supernatural world.

Isidro would finally become a warrior in his own right.

Serpico would remain beside Farnese.

And Guts would finally understand that his life does not need another enemy to justify its existence.

My dramatic ending would therefore conclude with a huge battle, but the real victory would be surprisingly personal.

Guts would finally stop defining himself by the person who destroyed his old life.

Griffith would lose because he could never understand something as simple as choosing another person's life over one's own dream.

And Guts would win not because he became the strongest warrior in the world, but because after everything that happened, he remained human.
