Beyond the Sword: My Peaceful Fan Prediction for the Final Chapter of Berserk

Of the three endings I can imagine for Berserk, the peaceful one might actually be the hardest to write.

Berserk has trained its audience to expect suffering. Guts has fought monsters, apostles, armies, and supernatural forces for most of his life. Casca has endured unimaginable trauma. Griffith has transformed his dream into something terrifying. The world itself has become increasingly dangerous.

So what would happen if the final victory was not another enormous battle?

My peaceful prediction is that Guts eventually realizes that the greatest possible victory is simply having a life in which he does not need to fight every day.

The final arc would still contain an enormous confrontation with Griffith, but the resolution would not depend entirely on killing him.

Instead, the story would eventually force both Guts and Griffith to confront the consequences of their choices.

The beginning of this ending would involve the gradual collapse of Griffith's perfect kingdom.

Not because someone defeats it militarily, but because the supernatural forces holding it together begin disappearing.

Griffith would discover that creating a perfect kingdom through supernatural power has created something fundamentally unstable.

The people inside his empire have become dependent on him.

The monsters protecting humanity are also part of the problem.

The world is caught between two realities.

Schierke would discover that the merging of the astral and physical worlds cannot continue indefinitely.

The world must eventually choose a direction.

The problem is that returning everything completely to the old world is impossible.

Too much has changed.

The final solution would therefore require humans to reclaim control of their own future.

This would bring Guts and Griffith into conflict one final time.

But unlike the dramatic version, Guts would not arrive looking for revenge.

He would arrive wanting to save Casca and his friends.

That difference would completely change the confrontation.

Griffith would ask Guts whether he still hates him.

Guts would say yes.

But then he would add that hatred is no longer the reason he is fighting.

That answer would surprise Griffith.

For the first time, Griffith would realize that Guts has moved beyond him emotionally.

Griffith's entire relationship with Guts has been based on the idea that Guts is someone who can still be defined by their shared past.

But Guts would no longer accept that.

He would remember the Band of the Hawk.

He would remember Judeau, Pippin, Corkus, Gaston, and the others.

He would remember the Golden Age.

But he would also accept that those memories cannot become his entire life.

Casca would support him.

This time, she would not simply be the person waiting to be rescued.

She would participate directly in the decision about what happens next.

Farnese would become one of the key figures helping ordinary people survive the collapse of Griffith's empire.

Serpico would remain at her side.

Isidro would finally become mature enough to understand that courage does not always mean challenging the strongest enemy.

Rickert would lead a group attempting to establish an independent human settlement.

Silat would help him.

Daiba would provide knowledge about the supernatural world, but rather than attempting to dominate it, he would help humanity understand how to coexist with the remaining magical forces.

Schierke would become the bridge between these two worlds.

She would eventually discover that the astral world cannot simply be destroyed.

It is part of existence.

The goal must be balance.

This revelation would fundamentally change the direction of the story.

Instead of humanity trying to eliminate every supernatural creature, humans would begin learning how to live in a world where magic exists without allowing monsters to rule them.

Guts would play a surprisingly small role in this process.

And that would be intentional.

He would finally discover that he does not have to be the person who solves everything.

That would be one of his greatest character developments.

The final confrontation with Griffith would therefore be more philosophical than physical.

Griffith would still be incredibly powerful.

Guts would still draw the Dragon Slayer.

But he would eventually lower it.

Griffith would ask why.

Guts would answer that he has spent enough of his life fighting Griffith's dream.

Now he wants to protect his own.

Griffith would struggle to understand.

Guts' dream would be incredibly simple.

He wants Casca to live.

He wants his friends to survive.

He wants to see another sunrise.

He wants to travel without constantly expecting something horrible to happen.

He wants to be able to sleep.

That simplicity would be almost incomprehensible to Griffith.

Griffith sacrificed everything for an enormous dream.

Guts would choose an ordinary life after losing almost everything.

The conflict would become a comparison between two definitions of happiness.

Griffith wants a perfect world.

Guts wants a life worth living.

In my peaceful ending, Griffith would eventually lose his supernatural form.

Not because Guts kills him, but because the mechanism sustaining his existence collapses.

The God Hand would disappear from the immediate human world.

The apostles would lose their connection to the larger supernatural order.

Some would die.

Others would flee.

Zodd would survive.

He would encounter Guts one final time.

Rather than fighting, Zodd would simply ask whether Guts has finally found what he was looking for.

Guts would answer that he is still looking.

Zodd would laugh.

Then he would leave.

That would be a much more fitting ending for Zodd than a simple death in battle.

He is a warrior who has lived for combat.

Perhaps his final realization would be that he does not need to die fighting to prove anything.

Meanwhile, Casca would begin rebuilding her life.

Her recovery would not be magically complete.

She would still carry memories of everything that happened.

There would still be difficult days.

But she would finally have the freedom to decide who she wanted to become.

Farnese would continue helping people affected by the supernatural disasters.

Serpico would remain beside her.

Isidro would become a skilled swordsman but would deliberately avoid becoming another Guts.

Rickert would build a new community.

Schierke would continue learning.

The surviving characters would slowly create a world that no longer revolves around Griffith.

That would be important.

The final victory would be making Griffith irrelevant.

The last few chapters would become increasingly quiet.

Guts would travel with Casca and their companions.

They would eventually find a remote place where they could stay.

There would be no throne.

No massive castle.

No army.

No prophecy.

Just a small home near the sea.

Guts would still have the Dragon Slayer, but it would remain leaning against a wall most of the time.

One day, Isidro would visit and complain that Guts has become lazy.

Guts would tell him to leave.

Schierke would laugh.

Farnese would bring food.

Serpico would quietly observe the ridiculous conversation.

Casca would smile.

And Guts would realize that he has not thought about Griffith for an entire day.

That would be the real ending.

Not the defeat of an enemy.

Not the destruction of the God Hand.

Not another Eclipse.

Simply one ordinary day.

The final panel I imagine would show Guts sitting outside as the sun sets.

The Dragon Slayer would be visible nearby.

But Guts would not be holding it.

Casca would sit beside him.

Neither would say anything.

The sky would gradually become dark.

Guts would look toward the horizon.

And for once, he would not be searching for an enemy.

He would simply be watching the sunset.

The final message would be that survival itself can be a victory.

Berserk began with a man defined by violence, rage, loneliness, and survival. A peaceful ending would therefore be most meaningful if it showed that Guts no longer needs violence to understand who he is.

He would always carry his scars.

He would never forget the people he lost.

The world would never become completely safe.

But he would finally have something he spent his entire life believing was impossible:

a future.

And perhaps that would be the most powerful ending Berserk could have.
