What If Subaru Is Not the Only Person Being Tested?

Another fan theory about Re:ZERO Season 4 proposes that the events surrounding Subaru may actually be part of a much larger test—one that involves the people around him just as much as Subaru himself.

Subaru is usually placed in situations where he must find a solution that protects other people. His ability gives him knowledge that nobody else possesses, but this creates an unusual imbalance. Subaru knows about previous failures while everyone else experiences only the current timeline.

That makes him uniquely responsible for solving problems.

However, the theory asks a different question: what if the people around Subaru are also being tested by the same circumstances?

Consider how Re:ZERO frequently changes relationships when information disappears. A character's attitude toward Subaru can change depending on what they remember about him, what they believe about him and whether they trust him. A person who was once an ally can become suspicious, while someone who barely knew Subaru might become important simply because of the circumstances surrounding them.

From this perspective, Season 4 could be testing not only Subaru's ability to solve problems but also the relationships he has created.

The theory suggests that Subaru's greatest achievement may not be surviving individual loops. It may be creating relationships strong enough to survive situations in which people no longer have all the information that originally brought them together.

That would make characters around Subaru extremely important.

For example, if someone continues to trust Subaru even without remembering every reason they originally trusted him, that relationship becomes fundamentally different. It would suggest that their connection is not based entirely on memories or circumstances.

This also creates an interesting contrast with Subaru himself. Subaru remembers things that nobody else remembers. His relationships are therefore often built on experiences that only he can recall.

Imagine the emotional difficulty of having to rebuild a relationship with someone while knowing that you have already experienced dozens of versions of that relationship.

That could be one of the hidden purposes of the Season 4 storyline.

Perhaps the story is asking whether genuine relationships can survive without shared memories.

If so, Subaru is not simply trying to "fix the timeline." He is trying to discover which connections are strong enough to survive when the circumstances supporting them disappear.

The conspiracy-style version of this theory goes even further: perhaps someone or something deliberately created circumstances in which Subaru's relationships would be tested. If that were true, the various memory and identity problems would not be isolated incidents. They would form part of a much larger experiment involving Subaru and the people closest to him.

There is currently no confirmation of such a plan, making this firmly a fan theory. But it fits one of Re:ZERO's recurring ideas surprisingly well: sometimes the hardest challenge is not defeating an enemy, but preserving trust when nobody has the same understanding of the past.
