1. Embrace the Classic JRPG Structure
This is not an open-world action game. FFVII is a classic Japanese Role-Playing Game (JRPG). This means:
- Turn-Based Combat: Time stops when you’re selecting commands. There is no rush. Think strategically.
- Exploration: You’ll navigate through towns, dungeons, and a world map, talking to NPCs to gather hints and advance the story.
- Pacing: The game has a deliberate rhythm of story beats, exploration, and combat encounters. Savor the atmosphere and world-building.
2. Understanding the Core: Materia is Your Power
The Materia system is the game’s brilliant, customizable heart. These colored orbs slot into your weapons and armor to grant abilities.
- Colors & Types:
- Green = Magic Materia (Fire, Cure, Bolt). Casts spells using MP.
- Red = Summon Materia (Ifrit, Shiva). Calls powerful beings for massive damage, using a lot of MP.
- Blue = Support Materia (All, Elemental). Modifies linked Materia. Must be placed in a linked slot (see below).
- Yellow = Command Materia (Steal, Sense). Adds new battle commands.
- Purple = Independent Materia (HP Plus). Grants stat boosts.
- Linking is Key: Weapons and armor have slots. Some slots are linked (connected by a line). Placing a Blue Support Materia in one linked slot and another Materia (like a Green Magic) in the other modifies it. Example: Linking “All” with “Fire” lets you cast Fire on all enemies.
- Materia Grows & Levels Up: Using Materia in battle grants AP (Ability Points). When it levels up, the spell/ability becomes stronger or new ones are unlocked. Equip it and use it to make it grow.
3. Combat Fundamentals: More Than Just Attack
- The ATB (Active Time Battle) Gauge: Under each character’s name, a gauge fills. When it’s full, that character can act. You can set this to “Wait” mode in the Config menu, which pauses when you’re in sub-menus (highly recommended for beginners).
- Limit Breaks – Your Super Move: As characters take damage, a “Limit” gauge fills. When it’s full, you can unleash a unique, powerful Limit Break attack. These are crucial for tough fights.
- Scan Your Foes: Use the “Sense” command (from the Sense Materia) or “Enemy Skill” Materia attacks to learn an enemy’s HP and weaknesses. Knowledge is power.
- Use the “L1/R1” Shortcut: In battle, you can shortcut your most-used spells/commands to the L1/R1 buttons for much faster selection.
4. Progression & Exploration Tips
- Talk to Everyone: NPC dialogue is your primary source of clues, world context, and often helpful tips about where to go or what to do next.
- Save Constantly & in Multiple Slots: Use save points (glowing orbs) whenever you see one. Use more than one save file. Rotate between 2-3 slots every few hours. This is your most important habit.
- Don’t Flee From Every Battle: Random encounters are how you gain Gil (money), Experience (levels), and AP (for Materia). Being slightly over-leveled makes the story much smoother. It’s okay to grind a little in a new area.
- Steal From Everything: Equip the “Steal” Materia. Try to steal from every new enemy type. You can get unique items, weapons, and useful consumables.
- Examine Your Surroundings: The pre-rendered backgrounds are detailed. Look for subtle paths, sparkling points (items), and unusual scenery. The interact button is your friend.
5. Character Roles & Party Management
- Characters are Blank Slates: While they have different base stats, any character can fill any role (healer, mage, fighter) based on the Materia you give them. Experiment!
- Swap Your Party: You will have more than three party members. You can switch them in and out at save points. Try different combinations to keep their levels balanced and to see unique battle dialogue.
- Healing is Essential: Always have at least one character equipped with Restore Materia (Cure, etc.). Buy plenty of Potions and Phoenix Downs.
6. Key Early Game Priorities
- Get the “All” Materia Early: It’s available for purchase in the first major town. It’s a game-changer for both offensive magic and healing.
- Learn Enemy Skills: The “Enemy Skill” Materia is incredibly powerful. If a monster uses a skill with a blue text name, and a character with this Materia equipped is hit by it (and survives), they will permanently learn that skill. Some are among the best in the game.
- Upgrade Your Gear: New towns mean new weapons and armor. Check shops. Weapons with more Materia slots are often more valuable than those with slightly higher attack.
7. Mindset & Final Advice
- You Can’t Permanently Miss Anything: With one very minor, cosmetic exception that has no gameplay impact, there is nothing in the main story that you can lock yourself out of. If you feel you missed something, you can almost always go back later. Relax and enjoy the ride.
- The World Opens Up: The first segment in Midgar is linear and serves as a gripping introduction. The game will soon grant you much more freedom to explore.
- Let the Music Set the Mood: Nobuo Uematsu’s score is a masterclass. Let it immerse you in the world’s many emotions.
Your journey with Cloud, Barrett, Tifa, and the others is a personal one. Focus on building bonds with your party, experiment with Materia combinations, and don’t rush. The story will unfold at its own pace. Now, you may leave the guide behind, step off the train, and embrace your mission. The planet awaits.
