Your Paldean Adventure Awaits
Welcome to the expansive, open world of the Paldea region! Pokémon Scarlet and Violet break the mold completely, offering three major storylines to tackle in any order within a truly open-world setting. This freedom is exciting but can be overwhelming. This guide will help you understand the new structure, master the essential mechanics, and chart your own path without getting lost.

1. The Paldean Starters: Potential Unleashed
Professor Sada (Scarlet) or Professor Turo (Violet) will give you a choice of three starters, each with a unique hidden theme that reveals itself upon evolution.
- Sprigatito (Grass): The “Capricious Prowler.” A speedy physical attacker. Its final evolution, Meowscarada, becomes Grass/Dark, gaining a powerful signature move and a focus on critical hits and misdirection.
- Fuecoco (Fire): The “Laid-Back Croc.” A slow but tanky Special Attacker. Its final evolution, Skeledirge, becomes Fire/Ghost, gaining a haunting signature move that damages opponents over time. A very strong and durable choice.
- Quaxly (Water): The “Eager Dancer.” A well-balanced physical attacker. Its final evolution, Quaquaval, becomes Water/Fighting, a nimble dancer that boosts its own stats with its signature move.
Remember: You’ll get a second, special “ride” Pokémon very early on that is essential for traversal but cannot be used in battles.
2. The Open World: Three Stories & Your Own Pace
For the first time, there is no set path. From your school in Mesagoza, you can see three major goals:
- Victory Road: The traditional Gym Challenge to become Champion.
- Path of Legends: Hunt for giant, rare ingredients called Herba Mystica by defeating enormous Titan Pokémon.
- Starfall Street: Take down the delinquent Team Star by raiding their bases.
The Golden Rule: You can do these in any order, but the levels of challenges are fixed. A Gym in one area might have Level 15 Pokémon, while another has Level 30. Pay attention to the recommended levels!
3. Your Exploration Toolkit: The Legendary Ride Pokémon
Almost immediately, you befriend the legendary Pokémon Koraidon (Scarlet) or Miraidon (Violet). It cannot battle but is your key to exploring.
- Unlock New Abilities by Beating Titans: To unlock dash, swim, climb, and glide functions, you must complete the Path of Legends story by defeating the five Titan Pokémon. This should be one of your first major goals, as it opens up the entire map.
- Exploration is Rewarded: Use your mount to scale cliffs, cross rivers, and glide to hidden areas. You’ll find rare items, TMs, and Pokémon with hidden abilities.
4. The New Battle Mechanics: Terastal Phenomenon
Paldea’s unique battle gimmick is Terastallization.
- How It Works: Each Pokémon has a Tera Type, which can be different from its normal type(s). When you Terastallize it (once per battle), it becomes a pure Tera Type, and moves matching that type get a power boost.
- Strategic Depth: A Water-type Pokémon with a Grass Tera Type can surprise an Electric-type opponent. You can find wild Tera Pokémon in glowing crystals across the map, which are great for catching Pokémon with unique Tera Types.
- The TM Machine: You don’t find TMs in balls. Instead, you collect Poké Materials from battling wild Pokémon and craft TMs at TM Machines found at Pokémon Centers. This encourages battling diverse species.
5. Let’s Go! Autobattling & Cooperative Play
- The “Let’s Go!” Feature: You can send a Pokémon out of its ball to walk with you. Press “R” to have it autobattle nearby wild Pokémon. It’s fantastic for quickly grinding EXP, collecting materials, and clearing paths without entering a turn-based battle. Your Pokémon’s HP will drop, so heal it with a Picnic or Potions.
- Union Circle & Co-Op: You can team up with up to three friends in a fully shared open world via Union Circle. You can explore, trade, battle, and even take on Tera Raids together seamlessly.
6. Building Your Team in a Vast World
With total freedom, your team can be highly personalized.
- Early Power Picks: Catch a Pawmi (becomes the strong Electric/Fighting Pawmot) or a Fidough (becomes the useful Fairy-type Dachsbun). The regional birds (Flamigo and Wattrel) are also great.
- Catch Everything: To get materials for TMs and EXP, engage in lots of autobattles. Don’t ignore lower-level areas; the materials are always useful.
- Type Coverage is Crucial: Since you can tackle challenges out of order, having a team with wide type coverage will help you adapt to unexpected high-level encounters.
7. Early Game Priority Checklist
- Follow the Main Road to the School: Complete the introductory tutorial until you can freely explore.
- Unlock Mount Abilities: Focus on the Path of Legends story first. Defeating the first few Titans (especially the one granting Dash) is the single most important thing for improving exploration.
- Visit Every Pokémon Center: They are your fast-travel points. Activate them as you discover them.
- Use Autobattling (“Let’s Go!”) Liberally: It’s the fastest way to level up and farm materials early on. Keep an eye on your lead Pokémon’s health.
- Check Levels Before Challenging: If you walk into a Gym or Star Base and get crushed, check the levels of the trainers outside. It’s the game’s way of telling you to come back later.
- Host or Join Tera Raids: The sparkling crystals on your map. Even low-level raids give great rewards like EXP Candy, Tera Shards (to change a Pokémon’s Tera Type), and rare items.
8. Mindset: Be the Director of Your Journey
Scarlet and Violet are about creating your own story. There is no “right” order. Maybe you’ll be a Champion who also took down a criminal syndicate, or a Titan hunter who happened to earn a few badges along the way. Embrace the jankiness that comes with such ambition—the joy is in the freedom, the discovery, and the shared experiences with friends. Plan your route, set your own goals, and enjoy the beautiful, messy, and incredibly fun chaos of Paldea.
Your adventure begins at either Naranja (Scarlet) or Uva (Violet) Academy. The entire region is your classroom. Choose your partner, bond with your legendary mount, and step out into a world where your next challenge is always just over the horizon.
