Your First Steps in the Withered Wasteland

Your adventure begins in a barren area fittingly named the Withered Wasteland. Your main companion in these early hours will be Professor Tangrowth, a mysterious and helpful Pokémon you’ll find hanging around the area’s Pokémon Center. Don’t hesitate to talk to him. If you’re ever unsure of what to do next, he’s your go-to source for guidance. You can also press the + Button and open your “Requests” to see a list of your current active missions.

Your primary goal in this first area is to restore life to the land. One of your first major tasks will be helping an Onix by bringing rain to the world. The key to everything you do is learning new moves from the Pokémon you meet, which will give you new ways to reshape the environment.

Your Tools for Transformation: Mastering Ditto’s Skills

As Ditto, you have unique abilities that are central to the gameplay. Learning how to use them efficiently will save you a ton of time.

1. Collect Items with the Inhale Ability

You’ll often find yourself surrounded by crafting materials like sticks, stones, and berries. Instead of picking them up one by one, simply press and hold the Y Button to use Ditto’s inhale ability and vacuum them all up at once. This is a massive time-saver, so make it a habit!

2. Manage Your PP (Power Points)

Using moves like Bulbasaur’s Leafage or Squirtle’s Water Gun consumes PP. You can see your remaining PP as a blue curved bar at the bottom right of your screen, above your active move. If you run out of PP, Ditto will get tired. The solution is simple: eat food! Berries are an excellent early-game source to replenish your energy.

3. Utilize Other Pokémon’s Specialties

You can’t do everything alone, and you aren’t meant to. Every Pokémon you befriend has at least one “specialty”. You can check what a Pokémon’s specialty is in your Pokédex. If you need help with a task, like watering plants or breaking rocks, talk to a Pokémon with the appropriate skill and press Up on the D-pad to ask them to follow you. Then, lead them to the job site.

Your Blueprint for Success: Building Smarter

Construction and crafting are the heart of Pokopia. A few smart strategies will make your building projects much smoother.

1. Position Your Workbench Next to a Storage Box

This is one of the most important early-game tips. When you get your first workbench from Bulbasaur , place a storage box right next to it. When you craft at a workbench, you can automatically draw materials from an adjacent storage box. This means you won’t have to constantly open your inventory and move items around, keeping you in the creative flow.

2. Inspect Sparkles for Habitat Clues

As you explore, keep an eye out for sparkles near objects in the world. Inspecting these can give you hints about a possible habitat you can create using that object. Sparkling spots in water might lead you to useful items.

3. Turn a Building into a Home

You can build structures from scratch, block-by-block, or by using building kits crafted by Pokémon with the right specialty. To turn any building into a proper home for a Pokémon, you just need to place at least three furniture items inside it. Once you’ve done that, you can ask a Pokémon to follow you and reassign them to that house as their new habitat.

Your Growing World: Key Game Systems to Understand

Pokopia has its own rhythm and rules. Understanding them will help you plan your time and make your Pokémon happy.

1. The Game Follows Real Time

The in-game world operates on the same clock as your Nintendo Switch 2 system. If it’s 3:00 PM in the real world, it’s 3:00 PM in Pokopia. This matters for a couple of reasons:

• Pokémon Appear at Specific Times: Some Pokémon can only be found during the day or at night.
• Construction Projects: Buildings you commission will finish at a specific real-world time.

2. Keep Your Pokémon Comfortable

Each Pokémon has preferences for their habitat, which affects their “comfort level”. You can ask a Pokémon “How’s your comfort level?” to get hints on what they want—perhaps a specific type of tree, a cozy bed, or a lamp.

• Why does this matter? The combined comfort levels of all your Pokémon directly influence your island’s Environment Level. Raising this level is key to progressing and unlocking new things.

3. Plan for Power

Some furniture, like lamps, requires electricity to function. You can get electricity from Electric-type Pokémon or by building generators like windmills. You’ll need to run power lines from the source to your buildings. If you’re planning a cozy, well-lit home, it’s a good idea to think about your electrical grid early on.

4. Unlock Fast Travel Quickly

As you explore, you’ll find large doors that lead to new areas like Bleak Beach. Your first priority in any new area should be to build a small house there. Once built, you can instantly fast travel between your different homes, saving you the trouble of walking back and forth across the map.
