1. Your Galar Starter: Personality & Potential
Professor Magnolia’s granddaughter, Sonia, will give you a choice from three classic-inspired starters. Their final evolutions have hidden, unique abilities that define them.
- Grookey (Grass): The “Energetic Drummer.” A lively, physical attacker. Its final form, Rillaboom, gains the incredible hidden Ability Grassy Surge, which sets up Grassy Terrain, boosting Grass moves and providing passive healing. It’s a powerful team supporter.
- Scorbunny (Fire): The “Speedy Striker.” Fast and eager to fight, it follows the tradition of Fire starters becoming Fighting-types (as Cinderace). Its hidden Ability, Libero, allows it to change its type to match whatever move it uses—a phenomenally versatile and powerful trait.
- Sobble (Water): The “Timely Sniper.” Starts shy but evolves into the cool, special-attacking Inteleon. Its hidden Ability, Sniper, boosts the damage of critical hits even further. With its high Speed and Special Attack, it’s a precision glass cannon.
Note: Your starter’s final evolution and its unique Ability are locked behind finding a specific, rare item (Ability Patch) in the late post-game. Don’t worry about it for your story playthrough.
2. The Heart of Galar: The Wild Area & Raids
This is the game’s biggest new feature and your hub for exploration and resources.
- What It Is: A massive, open-area zone connecting major towns. The camera shifts to an over-the-shoulder view, and you can explore freely. Weather varies by zone and changes daily, affecting which wild Pokémon appear.
- Max Raid Battles: Look for giant, glowing beams of light. These are Dens, where you can participate in Dynamax Raids. Team up with 3 other trainers (NPCs or real players online) to take down a giant, powerful Dynamax Pokémon. If you win, you get a chance to catch it, and you’ll earn valuable rewards like Exp. Candies, TRs (reusable moves), and Wishing Pieces.
- Early Goal: Spend time exploring the Wild Area early. The Pokémon here can be much higher level than your team, but you can run from them. Catch everything you can, and participate in low-star Raids (1-2 stars) for great EXP items.
3. The Stadium Spectacle: Dynamaxing & The Gym Challenge
Galar’s Gyms are massive stadiums filled with cheering crowds.
- Dynamaxing: In specific locations (Gyms, Raids), you can Dynamax one of your Pokémon for 3 turns. It becomes gigantic, its HP increases significantly, and its moves turn into powerful Max Moves that have additional effects (e.g., Max Flare creates harsh sunlight). This is your key to winning Gym battles.
- Gym Missions: Before facing each Gym Leader, you’ll complete a unique “Gym Mission”—a puzzle or mini-game. These are fun and break up the standard routine.
- The Crowd Matters: During Gym battles, the crowd’s cheers can occasionally power up your moves or trigger other helpful effects, adding to the sporting event atmosphere.
4. Streamlined Progression & Quality of Life
- The Exp. Candy Economy: Forget grinding. Exp. Candies earned from Raids let you instantly level up any Pokémon. You can easily keep a rotating team of favorites at the appropriate level.
- TRs vs. TMs: TMs are single-use items found on the ground. TRs (Technical Records) are powerful, reusable moves earned primarily from Raids. This makes building a strong movepool an active pursuit.
- Pokémon Camp & Curry: You can set up camp anywhere to play with your Pokémon, increasing friendship. You can also cook Curry with gathered ingredients to heal and grant bonuses. It’s charming and useful.
- Automatic Box Access: Your PC Boxes are accessible from anywhere in the world via the menu. No more trips to a Pokémon Center to switch your team.
5. Building Your Galar Team
With the Wild Area, your team options explode immediately.
- Early Wild Area Catches (Before 1st Badge): You can find surprisingly strong and rare Pokémon early, like Magikarp (becomes Gyarados), Psyduck, Ralts, and Togepi. Explore!
- Version Exclusives Matter: Sword and Shield have more impactful exclusives than usual, including different Gym Leaders in the middle of the story. Research if you have a strong preference.
- Type Coverage for Gyms: The Gym order is: Grass, Water, Fire, Fighting, Ghost, Fairy, Rock, Dark (Ice in Sword, Dark in Shield for the final Gym). Plan your team’s coverage accordingly.

6. Essential Early Game Checklist
- Visit the Wild Area Immediately: As soon as you step into it, spend 30-60 minutes exploring, catching new Pokémon, and trying a 1-star Raid.
- Talk to the Watt Traders: In the Wild Area, you’ll find NPCs who sell valuable items for Watts (currency earned from finding sparkly spots on the ground and completing Raids). Buy Dynamax Candy to increase your Pokémon’s Dynamax Level.
- Get the Fishing Rod Early: From a fisherman on Route 2. Use it to catch varied Water-types.
- Use the “Poke Jobs” Feature: At any Pokémon Center PC, you can send Pokémon off on “Jobs” to earn massive EXP or EV points passively. It’s a fantastic way to train backup team members.
- Don’t Fear the Overleveled Pokémon: In the Wild Area, you’ll see Pokémon with red (!) symbols, indicating they’re much higher level. You can still catch them (with a very low catch rate) or simply avoid them.
7. Mindset: A Sporting Epic
Sword & Shield are about spectacle, community, and the thrill of the stadium. Embrace the Dynamax mechanic in big Gym battles—it’s the core of the region’s identity. The Wild Area is your sandbox for experimentation and power-leveling. The story is a straightforward sports-underdog tale with charming characters. Focus on building a team you love, exploring the open areas, and enjoying the most visually polished and smoothly paced mainline Pokémon experience to date.
Your journey begins in the quiet town of Postwick, but your destiny lies in the roaring stadiums of Galar. Choose your starter, step into the Wild Area, and get ready for your shot at becoming a Champion in a region where everyone is watching. Good luck, and have a proper good time!
