The second season benefits from the foundation established by the first and continues to combine palace intrigue, mystery, humor, character relationships, and historical atmosphere. It also had a significant presence during the 2026 Anime Awards, where it was nominated for Anime of the Year and several other categories. What makes it my random choice is that it doesn't need enormous battles to create tension. A conversation, a suspicious illness, an unusual ingredient, or a seemingly insignificant detail can become more suspenseful than a conventional fight because the viewer starts asking what Maomao has noticed that everyone else missed. There are certainly flashier anime in 2026—Frieren Season 2, Witch Hat Atelier, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3, Gachiakuta, and others have received considerable attention from critics and fans. But if I were choosing based on the anime I would most happily recommend to someone who wants something intelligent, character-driven, visually appealing, and different from the standard action formula, The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 would be my pick.
