How Do You Make Better Use of Abilities in Hades?

A fascinating gameplay question in Hades is how players can make better use of Zagreus's different attacks, abilities, and Boons instead of simply choosing whatever appears strongest. Because every escape attempt can produce a different combination of upgrades, adapting to the current build is one of the game's central skills.

A useful starting point is understanding how different abilities interact. An attack, special, cast, dash, and other tools do not necessarily need to be powerful individually. A combination becomes interesting when one ability complements another.

For example, an upgrade that works particularly well with repeated attacks may encourage a very different playstyle from one that rewards occasional heavy hits. Players can therefore think about the entire build rather than evaluating every upgrade in isolation.

Another important gameplay habit is adapting to the weapon being used. The different Infernal Arms encourage different ranges, rhythms, and approaches. A strategy that feels comfortable with one weapon may be awkward with another, so players should not assume that one universal combat style will work equally well everywhere.

Movement is also essential. It can be tempting to stand still and concentrate on attacking, but Hades rewards players who constantly consider their position. Dashing can be used not only as an escape tool but also as part of an offensive rhythm.

The rooms themselves can also influence decisions. Enemies may attack from different directions, and environmental obstacles can affect how safely players can move around. Controlling where combat happens can sometimes be more important than simply attacking faster.

Players should also resist the temptation to restart a run just because the early choices do not appear perfect. One of the game's strengths is learning how to make an imperfect collection of upgrades work. A run that initially looks mediocre can become surprisingly effective once the player understands how the abilities interact.

This is also why repeated runs are so useful. Even when a player does not reach the end, they gain information about enemy patterns, room layouts, attack timings, and their own preferred playstyle.

The real secret to improving in Hades is therefore not finding one perfect build. It is becoming comfortable with adapting. Every run asks the player to work with what they receive, make decisions based on the current situation, and turn a collection of individual abilities into a coherent fighting style.

Once that mindset develops, each new run becomes less about hoping for perfect upgrades and more about seeing what interesting strategy can be created from the options available.
