Why do people prefer watching other people's lives online?

I think people watch other people's lives online for many of the same reasons humans have always been interested in observing other people, but social media has made that behavior extraordinarily easy and continuous. A person's daily life can now be turned into a stream of small stories that viewers can observe from anywhere in the world. Part of the appeal is simple curiosity. People naturally want to know how others live, what they eat, where they travel, how they decorate their homes, what they buy, how they work, and what their relationships look like. Another reason is comparison. Watching someone else's life gives viewers information they can unconsciously use to evaluate their own circumstances, whether that comparison makes them feel inspired, satisfied, jealous, reassured, or motivated. There is also a parasocial element: after watching the same creator for months or years, a viewer can begin to feel familiar with that person's personality even though the relationship is one-sided. That familiarity can make watching a creator feel surprisingly similar to spending time with an acquaintance. I also think online content provides a form of low-effort social participation. You can watch someone else's vacation, gaming session, cooking routine, workout, family activity, or daily vlog without having to leave your room or participate directly. For some people, this can be relaxing because there are no social obligations attached. Interestingly, the most popular creators don't necessarily have extraordinary lives; sometimes their appeal comes from making ordinary activities feel relatable. Someone cleaning a room, preparing dinner, going shopping, or talking about a bad day can attract an audience precisely because viewers recognize parts of their own lives in it. In my opinion, this is why "watching other people's lives" has become such a powerful form of entertainment: it combines curiosity, social connection, comparison, storytelling, and relaxation into something that requires almost no effort from the viewer. The screen effectively turns everyday human behavior into an endless source of stories.
