Is the internet becoming too commercialized?

I think the internet has definitely become more commercialized compared with the earlier web, although I would not necessarily say that commercialization itself is the problem. Commercial activity helped make many online services possible, including free websites, search engines, social networks, video platforms, online communities, and enormous amounts of content. The problem, in my opinion, begins when commercial incentives become so dominant that almost every online interaction starts feeling like an opportunity to sell something. Search results can contain advertisements, social media feeds are mixed with sponsored content, websites encourage subscriptions, videos contain sponsorships, apps promote premium features, and creators increasingly have to think about algorithms, advertising, memberships, affiliate links, and brand partnerships. None of those things are automatically bad, but the cumulative effect can make the internet feel less like a collection of communities and more like one giant marketplace. I particularly notice this when trying to find genuinely useful information. Sometimes a simple question leads to pages filled with advertisements, affiliate recommendations, pop-ups, newsletter requests, cookie notices, autoplay videos, and other distractions before the actual information appears. At the same time, I think it would be unfair to romanticize the older internet too much. Earlier websites also contained advertising, commercial forums existed, and companies have been using the web to make money since its early expansion. The major difference is the scale and sophistication of modern digital commercialization. Platforms can now collect enormous amounts of behavioral information and use sophisticated systems to determine what content and advertisements people are most likely to engage with. This creates a complicated relationship between users and the services they use every day. I still think there is enormous value in the internet precisely because people continue to create things that are not purely commercial: forums, fan communities, open-source projects, personal websites, educational resources, discussion groups, wikis, creative projects, and countless other forms of user-generated content. In fact, that part of the internet may become increasingly valuable precisely because it can feel different from algorithmically optimized commercial platforms. My opinion is therefore less "commercialization is destroying the internet" and more that the internet needs room for things that do not have to maximize revenue. A healthy online environment can contain businesses and advertisements while still preserving spaces where people can communicate, create, learn, and participate without every interaction being treated as a transaction.
