Is social-media fame still worth pursuing?

[Harar]

My random opinion is that social-media fame can still be worth pursuing, but chasing fame for its own sake has become much less attractive than building something useful around an audience. Having thousands or even millions of followers can look incredibly valuable from the outside, yet follower numbers don't automatically translate into stable income, meaningful relationships, professional opportunities, or personal satisfaction. A creator can become famous for a particular video one week and then discover that the audience has little interest in anything else they produce. I think this is one of the biggest differences between having attention and having influence. Attention is temporary; influence usually comes from giving people a reason to continue listening to you. Someone who builds a reputation around teaching, entertainment, commentary, art, gaming, fitness, business, or another recognizable subject may have a much stronger long-term position than someone who simply tries to become viral. Social media can also create an unusual psychological trap because the numbers are visible all the time. Followers, views, likes, comments, and shares can make a person feel as though their value is constantly being measured. A post that performs poorly can therefore feel like personal rejection even when the algorithm, timing, topic, or audience simply wasn't right. I don't think that means social-media fame is inherently bad. It can create opportunities that would have been almost impossible for ordinary individuals to access in previous generations. A creator can meet collaborators, find customers, build a career, promote creative work, or reach an international audience without traditional gatekeepers. My view is simply that the healthiest goal is usually not "I want to be famous" but "I want to create something that people genuinely want to follow." Fame can then become a side effect rather than the entire purpose.

I think social-media fame can still be worth pursuing, but pursuing fame itself is probably a poor objective. The internet has made it easier than ever for an ordinary person to reach an enormous audience, yet that same accessibility has made attention incredibly competitive. Millions of people are producing videos, photographs, commentary, music, gaming content, educational material, and entertainment every day, so simply becoming visible is no longer enough. What seems much more valuable to me is building a recognizable reputation around something. A person who becomes known for excellent gaming guides, funny anime commentary, useful tutorials, interesting storytelling, or a distinctive creative style can potentially turn an audience into a long-term community. Fame based entirely on a viral moment is much less stable. A creator might receive millions of views for one piece of content and then discover that those viewers don't care about anything else they make. There is also a psychological cost to constantly watching follower numbers and engagement statistics. When success is measured every day by likes and views, it becomes easy to interpret declining numbers as personal failure, even though algorithms and audience interests can change for reasons completely outside the creator's control. Personally, I think social media is most worthwhile when fame is treated as a byproduct rather than the main destination. If someone genuinely enjoys creating things and eventually develops a large audience, that's wonderful. If the only motivation is becoming famous, the constant competition can become exhausting very quickly. The strange paradox of social media is that the people who focus entirely on being famous often become frustrated, while people who become obsessed with making something genuinely interesting sometimes become famous almost accidentally.
