Why is making new friends harder as people get older?

My opinion is that making new friends becomes harder with age not necessarily because adults become less social, but because the circumstances that naturally produce friendships become less common. When people are children or teenagers, they can spend hundreds or thousands of hours around the same classmates, neighbors, teammates, and club members without having to deliberately arrange those interactions. Friendship can develop simply because two people sit next to each other every day. Adults often lose that advantage. Workplaces may contain people of different ages and personalities, people commute from different areas, responsibilities consume free time, and many adults already have established social circles. There is also a psychological component: adults generally have a better understanding of what kinds of personalities they enjoy, which can make them more selective. That selectiveness isn't necessarily bad, but it can make the process slower. A teenager might become friends with someone after discovering that they both like the same video game, while an adult may need repeated interactions before deciding that someone is trustworthy enough to become a close friend. Another interesting factor is that adult friendships often require planning. Instead of simply walking outside and finding your friends, two adults might need to coordinate work schedules, family responsibilities, transportation, and personal commitments just to have coffee together. This makes friendship feel like another appointment rather than something that naturally happens. I also think adults can become more afraid of rejection. Someone who has already experienced difficult friendships may be less willing to approach a stranger and risk discovering that the other person isn't interested. The irony is that many adults probably want more friends but don't have enough repeated social exposure to create them naturally. That's why hobbies, sports, gaming communities, classes, volunteering, and recurring social groups can be so effective: they recreate one of the conditions that made childhood friendship easier—seeing the same people repeatedly. Friendship often doesn't begin with a spectacular conversation; it begins with familiarity, repeated contact, small interactions, and eventually the realization that you actually enjoy being around this person.
