Is Jinshi Hiding More Than His Identity From Maomao?

One of the most entertaining aspects of The Apothecary Diaries is the contrast between Jinshi’s outward behavior and the information he keeps to himself. He can appear charming, elegant, and almost impossibly capable, yet his position within the imperial world makes many ordinary interactions politically complicated.

A compelling fan theory for Season 3 is that Jinshi’s secrecy may eventually become more significant to his relationship with Maomao than either of them expects. The idea is not simply that he has additional secrets. Rather, it is that the information Jinshi withholds could eventually change how Maomao understands their entire relationship.

Maomao Understands Evidence Better Than Appearances

Maomao is unusually good at recognizing inconsistencies.

When someone describes an illness, she looks for symptoms that support or contradict the explanation. When a substance appears suspicious, she considers its possible effects. When an incident seems accidental, she searches for evidence that somebody deliberately caused it.

However, Maomao does not always apply the same intensity of investigation to personal relationships.

She can spend considerable time examining a mysterious medical problem while dismissing Jinshi’s behavior as an annoying distraction. This contrast creates much of the comedy between them, but it also provides the foundation for the theory.

What if Maomao has noticed more about Jinshi than she consciously acknowledges?

She might recognize that his behavior changes depending on the people present, that certain subjects make him unusually cautious, or that his access to information exceeds what his apparent position would normally suggest.

Rather than investigating these inconsistencies, she may simply accept them because getting involved in Jinshi’s personal affairs would create additional trouble.

The theory suggests that Season 3 could force Maomao to reconsider this convenient arrangement.

The Difference Between a Personal Secret and a Political Secret

Jinshi’s secrets cannot be separated easily from the world in which he lives.

In an ordinary relationship, withholding information might lead to an argument. Inside the imperial palace, the same information could affect alliances, succession, reputations, and personal safety.

This means Jinshi may have reasons for keeping certain facts hidden that go beyond embarrassment or personal preference.

The fan theory proposes that the most important question will not be whether Maomao discovers another secret about him. It will be whether she can understand why revealing that secret might endanger people.

Suppose Maomao discovers information that explains Jinshi’s unusual access to influential individuals. She might initially approach the revelation as an intellectual puzzle, attempting to determine how his position works. But once she understands the political implications, she could realize that discussing the truth openly would be dangerous.

This could create a rare situation in which Maomao knows something important but cannot treat it as ordinary information.

Her medical investigations generally reward accuracy and explanation. Political secrets, however, may require silence.

Could Their Relationship Change Because of What Maomao Knows?

The theory becomes especially interesting when considering how Maomao and Jinshi understand each other.

Jinshi often appears to want Maomao’s attention, while Maomao prefers to preserve her independence and avoid unnecessary complications. Their interactions are therefore full of misunderstandings, humor, and competing priorities.

But what happens if Maomao learns something that makes Jinshi’s behavior suddenly understandable?

She might discover that certain decisions she interpreted as personal interference were actually influenced by his responsibilities. Alternatively, she could realize that he has been protecting her from information that would place her in danger.

Neither possibility would automatically excuse every decision he has made. Instead, it would force Maomao to distinguish between Jinshi’s personal feelings and the restrictions imposed by his position.

That distinction could make their relationship more mature.

The reverse is also possible. Maomao might discover that Jinshi’s secrecy has caused her to underestimate how much her own actions matter to him. She could realize that their interactions have political consequences even when she thinks she is simply responding to an irritating acquaintance.

This would be particularly entertaining because Maomao is not easily impressed by status or appearances. A revelation might change her understanding of Jinshi without suddenly transforming her into someone who cares about palace prestige.

She would still be Maomao.

She might simply begin asking more dangerous questions.

The Conspiracy Theory: Is Someone Encouraging Them to Remain Close?

The most speculative version of this theory imagines that a third party could benefit from Jinshi and Maomao continuing to work together.

Their abilities complement each other. Jinshi has access to people and information that Maomao would struggle to obtain independently, while Maomao can interpret evidence that others overlook.

If someone inside the palace recognizes this combination, they might quietly encourage their cooperation.

Such a person would not necessarily need to manipulate either character directly. They could simply arrange circumstances in which Jinshi requires Maomao’s expertise and Maomao finds an irresistible mystery.

The result would be a partnership that advances someone else’s interests, even though both participants believe they are acting for their own reasons.

There is no established evidence that a secret third party is orchestrating their relationship. This remains an imaginative possibility rather than a prediction about confirmed events.

Still, it raises an interesting question for Season 3: if Jinshi and Maomao become increasingly important to one another, will their relationship remain something they control themselves, or will the palace eventually attempt to turn it into a political instrument?
