Your First Day: A Step-by-Step Checklist

Your journey begins the moment you step off the plane with two other animal villagers, ready to start your new island life. The game operates in real-time, so making the most of your first day is key to smooth progression. Here’s your essential to-do list.

Priority TaskWhat To DoWhy It’s Important
Attend the DIY WorkshopTalk to Tom Nook in the Resident Services tent. He’ll teach you how to craft tools from tree branches and stones. This unlocks the core crafting mechanic, essential for gathering resources and progressing.
Craft a Flimsy Net & RodGather 5 tree branches for the net and 5 tree branches for the rod. You’ll need these to catch bugs and fish, which are your main sources of early-game income and museum donations.
Donate 5 Critters to Tom NookCatch five unique fish or bugs and give them to Tom Nook. This simple act sets in motion the arrival of Blathers the owl, who will establish the island’s museum the very next day.
Start Earning Nook MilesCheck the Nook Miles app on your NookPhone. Complete tasks like talking to villagers, shaking trees, and pulling weeds.Nook Miles are a special currency. You can use them to pay off your first loan (a great idea!) and buy unique items.

Pro-Tip: Your very first loan is a manageable 49,800 Bells or 5,000 Nook Miles. Paying it off with Nook Miles is a fantastic option because they are plentiful at the start and it’s a one-time opportunity to use them this way. Once paid, you’ll get a real house the next day, replacing your tent and giving you access to valuable home storage.

Choosing Your Island Layout

Before you even pick a name, you’ll be presented with a choice between four different island maps. While you can reshape your island significantly later in the game, your initial layout will be your home for your first few weeks. Here’s what to look for generally:

  • Terrain Height: The map uses shades of green to show elevation. The darker the green, the lower the land. Aim for an island with as much dark green area as possible. Since you can’t climb cliffs until you get a ladder (later in the game), more accessible land means more room to explore and gather resources from day one.
  • Water Features: You’ll be doing a lot of fishing early on. Look for an island with a good mix of fishing spots. A long stretch of beach is great for catching rare beach fish, while ponds and waterfalls are home to their own unique species. Fewer, broader rivers can also make navigating the island less tedious before you get the vaulting pole.
  • Resident Services Location: The location of the Resident Services tent is marked on the map and cannot be moved later. A central location is convenient, saving you long walks from the beach or your home to access its services (crafting, buying/selling).
  • River Mouths & Airport Color: These are fixed and can’t be changed. The color of your airport (red, yellow, blue, or green) is purely cosmetic.

Don’t Stress! If you don’t like any of the four offered maps, you can restart the game to get a new set of choices. Most importantly, remember that you will eventually unlock terraforming, which allows you to build cliffs and rivers, reshape the land, and lay down new paths. Your initial choice is just the starting canvas for your masterpiece.

Unlocking the 3.0 Update Features

In early 2026, a massive free update, version 3.0, added a host of new features that breathe even more life into the game. However, these aren’t available from the very first minute. To access them, you’ll need to progress the main story by completing tasks for Tom Nook.

Here’s a quick look at the major new features and how to unlock them:

FeatureDescriptionHow to Unlock
Kapp’n’s Resort HotelA hotel run by Kapp’n’s family where you can decorate guest rooms based on themes, earning Hotel Tickets for souvenirs.Achieve a 3-star island rating and have Kapp’n unlocked. This is a mid-to-late game goal that involves decorating your island with furniture, flowers, and crafting bridges and inclines.
Slumber Island (Creative Mode)A separate, blank-slate island you can visit while sleeping. Here, you have unlimited access to all furniture and items you’ve ever obtained to build freely without affecting your main island.Unlocked after you have visited a Dream Island (via Luna), which itself is unlocked around 8 days into gameplay after progressing the main story.
Resetti’s Cleanup ServiceA service offered by the mole Resetti that can clear a designated area of your island of all placed items (flowers, furniture, etc.) for a fee. After the 3.0 update, find Resetti wandering on your island and speak to him to unlock the service, which is then accessed through Isabelle at Resident Services.
Expanded MultiplayerPlay with up to 12 friends online at once (requires Nintendo Switch 2 and the paid upgrade).Requires the paid Switch 2 upgrade and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.

A Note on the Switch 2 Upgrade: The 3.0 update is free for all players. However, enhanced 4K resolution, the 12-player multiplayer, and other performance improvements require the paid Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade.

General Tips for a Happy Island Life

  • Don’t Rush: Animal Crossing is a game meant to be savored. There’s no wrong way to play, and there’s always tomorrow to catch that fish, finish that bridge, or find that perfect villager.
  • Talk to Your Villagers: They are the heart of your island! They’ll give you gifts, teach you new reactions, and offer advice.
  • Shake Trees (With Caution!): Shake trees every day. They drop branches, furniture, and 100 Bells! But be warned, wasps can also fall out. Always have your net equipped when shaking so you can catch them if a nest drops.
  • Hit Rocks Daily: Find a rock and hit it with your shovel or axe. You can get up to 8 items, including iron nuggets, clay, stones, and gold nuggets. Make sure you haven’t eaten fruit before you start, or you’ll destroy the rock!
  • Check the Beach: A message in a bottle washes up on your shore every day. It contains a new DIY recipe you can learn.
  • Use Your NookPhone: The Nook Miles app is your constant companion. Check it often for new goals and achievements to rack up those valuable miles.

Your island is your blank canvas, and every day is a new opportunity to paint a little more of your perfect getaway. Welcome to the community, and enjoy your new life
