Professor Sycamore offers you a classic trio with a twist: all three are pure single-types (a series first) and have ties to a new, game-changing mechanic.

• Chespin (Grass): The “Spiky Defender.” Starts cute but evolves into the bulky, knightly Chesnaught (Grass/Fighting). A physical tank that can take hits and strike back hard.
• Fennekin (Fire): The “Mystical Specialist.” Evolves into the elegant Delphox (Fire/Psychic). A fast Special Attacker with a unique dual-typing that offers great offensive coverage.
• Froakie (Water): The “Swift Enigma.” Evolves into the fan-favorite Greninja (Water/Dark), one of the fastest starters ever. A master of speed and critical hits, with a fantastic design.

The Mega Evolution Hook: Early on, you’ll receive a Mega Ring and a Mega Stone for your starter’s final evolution. Mega Evolution is a temporary, battle-only transformation that makes a Pokémon vastly more powerful and often changes its Ability. It’s a once-per-battle trump card. Your starter is guaranteed to have this potential.

2. The 3D World: Movement, Style, and Super Training

Kalos is designed for exploration in full 3D.

• The Roller Skates: You receive Roller Skates almost immediately. Use the Circle Pad to glide smoothly around towns and routes. They’re faster than running and add to the feeling of freedom. You can toggle between skates and the D-pad for precise movement.
• Character Customization: A first for the series! You can change your hairstyle, skin tone, and buy new clothes at boutiques in Lumiose City and other towns. Express your personal style throughout the adventure.
• Super Training: A new, accessible minigame on the bottom screen that allows you to visually train your Pokémon’s Effort Values (EVs). It’s a fun, intuitive way to maximize your Pokémon’s hidden stat potential without complex battling.

3. The Streamlined Experience: Exp. Share & The PSS

• The Broken (in a good way) Exp. Share: This Key Item, obtained early, is now a party-wide experience multiplier. When turned ON, every Pokémon in your party gains a significant share of EXP from battles, even if they didn’t fight. This makes maintaining a balanced team of 6 incredibly easy and eliminates grinding. You can turn it off if you want a greater challenge.
• The Player Search System (PSS): The bottom screen becomes your social hub. It shows friends and passerby players online, allowing for instant trades, battles, and O-Powers (temporary buffs you can send/receive). It’s the most seamless online integration the series had seen.

4. The Vast Kalos Pokédex: An International Celebration

Kalos features over 450 Pokémon from all generations, right from the start.

• Early Team-Building is a Playground: Your first forest alone contains Pokémon from Gen 1, 3, 4, and 6. You can build almost any team you dream of early on.
• The “Early Lucario” Gift: Shortly after the first Gym, you are gifted a Riolu that will quickly evolve into a Lucario holding its Lucarionite, making it capable of Mega Evolution. This powerful Fighting/Steel-type can be a cornerstone of your team.
• The “Kanto Starter” Gift: Later, Professor Sycamore will gift you one of the original Kanto starters (Charmander, Bulbasaur, or Squirtle), and its corresponding Mega Stone. This gives you two potential Mega Evolvers on your team.

5. Key New Battle Features

• Fairy Type: A brand new type is introduced! It is strong against Dragon, Dark, and Fighting types, and weak to Poison and Steel. It is also immune to Dragon-type moves. This rebalances the entire metagame. Common Fairy-types include Flabébé, Sylveon, and Gardevoir (which was retconned to be Psychic/Fairy).
• Sky Battles: Certain trainers will challenge you to “Sky Battles,” where only Flying-type Pokémon or those with Levitate can participate. It’s a fun, optional gimmick.
• Horde Encounters: Sometimes, you’ll face five wild Pokémon at once. These are great for quickly leveling up or EV training with area-of-effect moves.

6. Early Game Priority Checklist

1. Customize Your Look Early: Visit the boutique in Santaloine City as soon as you can to enjoy the new feature.
2. Talk to Everyone in Lumiose City: The huge central city can be overwhelming. Talk to NPCs; many give you useful items or side quests. Save before using the cabs—there’s a notorious early glitch if the game crashes while in a cab.
3. Use Super Training: Spend a few minutes with your starter in Super Training to give its stats a quick, noticeable boost.
4. Catch a Pikachu in Santaloine Forest: A classic Electric-type is available very early.
5. Manage Your Exp. Share: With it ON, your team will level up very quickly. If you feel over-leveled, don’t be afraid to turn it off for a while to maintain challenge, or rotate more Pokémon into your party.
