Crystal Version is the definitive way to experience Johto, and it offers a fantastic mix of challenge and discovery. The key is that Crystal introduced a few unique twists, like making the legendary Suicune a guaranteed story encounter instead of a frustrating roaming fight. This makes it a much more practical and powerful addition to your team than in Gold and Silver.
With that in mind, here’s a ranked list of the top 10 Pokémon that will make your journey through Johto as smooth and powerful as possible.

1. Tyranitar
While it’s a pseudo-legendary that can’t be obtained until late in the game, Tyranitar’s sheer power makes it an undeniable pick for the top spot. Its Rock/Dark typing and massive 134 base Attack make it a destructive force against almost everything in the game. In Crystal, the Move Tutor also expands its coverage options, making it even more versatile than in Gold and Silver.
2. Snorlax
If you’re looking for pure, unkillable bulk, Snorlax is your answer. Its monstrous 160 HP and solid 110 Special Defense allow it to absorb hits while setting up. The classic Curse strategy—which raises its Attack and Defense—makes it an unstoppable physical tank. Combined with Rest and Sleep Talk, it can keep itself healthy and attacking even while asleep.
3. Feraligatr
Among the starters, Feraligatr is arguably the most reliable choice for an efficient playthrough. While its Water-type moves are special in Gen 2, it has a fantastic physical movepool including Strength and Dig to take advantage of its 105 base Attack. It’s available from the start and learns the HM Surf, which is essential.
4. Suicune
Crystal’s unique story makes Suicune a guaranteed catch, which is a huge reason it is on this list. This legendary Water-type is incredibly bulky, boasting 115 in both Defense and Special Defense. It’s a phenomenal defensive wall that can outlast opponents with Rest and slowly chip away with Toxic. It’s a great, reliable powerhouse that you don’t have to chase across the region.
5. Ampharos
For Gold and Silver players, Ampharos is the easy pick for the best Electric-type. It’s available early as Mareep, evolves quickly, and has great all-around stats for a playthrough. It learns powerful moves like Thunder Punch naturally and can learn coverage moves like Fire Punch via TMs. (Note: Ampharos is exclusive to Gold and Silver; Crystal players will need to find alternatives like Electrode or trade.)
6. Heracross
This Bug/Fighting-type is a fantastic physical attacker with a base 125 Attack stat. While its movepool in Gen 2 is somewhat limited, its Megahorn is a devastating move that can tear through many opponents. It’s particularly effective against the Dark and Psychic types you’ll face in the late game. Finding one early via Headbutt trees can make it a run-defining Pokémon.
7. Espeon/Umbreon
Both Eeveelutions are top-tier choices, depending on what your team needs.
- Espeon is a blistering fast special attacker with 130 Special Attack and 110 Speed, making it a great Psychic-type sweeper.
- Umbreon, on the other hand, is a defensive wall with massive Special Defense and Defense, designed to stall out opponents with Toxic and Confuse Ray. Choose whichever fits your team.
8. Typhlosion
It’s the second best starter choice and the most straightforward Fire-type powerhouse. With 109 Special Attack and 100 Speed, it is built to be a special sweeper. It’s often compared to Charizard for its similar stat distribution and role. Its evolution line learns the powerful Flamethrower, making it a consistent damage dealer.
9. Lapras
If you didn’t choose Feraligatr and you need a strong Water-type, Lapras is an excellent choice. It boasts a fantastic base 95 Special Attack and is incredibly bulky with 130 HP. Its dual Water/Ice typing gives it perfect offensive coverage against two of the most common threats in Johto: Ground and Dragon types. It’s a very well-rounded Pokémon that can fill a lot of roles.
10. Miltank
It’s a great reminder that Normal-types can be tough. Miltank is a fast and bulky Pokémon that you can find after the third gym. With 95 HP, 105 Defense, and a surprising 100 Speed, it can be a great tank. Its access to Milk Drink for healing and Body Slam for damage with a paralysis chance makes it a very frustrating Pokémon to fight—and a great one to have on your side.
Good luck with your journey through the Johto region!
