1. Swampert
The undisputed king of Hoenn. Its Water/Ground typing leaves it with only one weakness (Grass) while providing crucial immunities to Electric moves and powerful STAB (Same-Type Attack Bonus) on Surf and Earthquake. It’s a bulky physical tank that can learn Ice Beam for excellent coverage against the Dragon-type Elite Four member, Drake.
2. Gardevoir
Gardevoir is arguably the best special attacker for an in-game team. Its access to moves like Psychic, Thunderbolt, and Calm Mind allows it to sweep through many opponents. It’s a reliable and powerful special sweeper from early to late game.
3. Salamence
Hoenn’s premier Dragon-type. With a massive 135 base Attack and access to Dragon Dance, Salamence can boost its Attack and Speed to sweep entire teams. It’s available late, but the grind for a Bagon in Meteor Falls is well worth the effort.
4. Breloom
An absolute powerhouse with a 130 base Attack, tying it for the highest among Fighting-types in the game. Its Grass/Fighting typing provides excellent utility, and it can use Mach Punch for priority damage.
5. Manectric
The first Electric-type you’ll encounter is one of the best. Manectric’s high Speed and Special Attack make it excellent for taking out the many Water- and Flying-types in Hoenn.
6. Heracross
This Bug/Fighting-type boasts an incredible 125 base Attack and can decimate opponents with Megahorn and Brick Break. It is particularly effective against the Dark and Psychic types you’ll face.
7. Crobat
This evolution of Zubat out-speeds basically everything and has decent bulk. It’s a fantastic user of the Sludge Bomb TM and can provide useful support with Confuse Ray.
8. Milotic
This Pokémon is exceptionally difficult to obtain, requiring a Feebas find, but its bulk and power are unmatched. It is the perfect counter to Wallace’s Water-types, with a massive Special Defense and a base 100 Special Attack.
9. Aggron
A Rock/Steel-type with monstrous physical Defense. It is best used as a defensive wall that can resist many common attacks. While it is slow, its high Attack stat can deal massive damage.
10. Hariyama
An extremely bulky and hard-hitting Fighting-type. Its high HP stat and decent Attack make it a reliable front-line fighter. It can also be taught Bulk Up to boost its offenses even further.
Good luck on your journey to become the Champion of Hoenn!
