Platinum is widely considered the definitive Sinnoh experience. It fixes the original Diamond and Pearl’s notorious “Fire-type drought” by adding Houndour and Flareon to the regional Pokédex before the post-game , and gives you access to more team options overall. The physical/special split is in full effect, making many Pokémon more viable than ever.

Here are 10 of the best Pokémon to carry you through Sinnoh:
1. Garchomp
The undisputed king of Platinum. Available before the fourth gym as a Gible in Wayward Cave, it evolves into one of the most dominant non-legendary Pokémon in the game. With 130 Attack and 102 Speed , STAB Earthquake and Outrage, plus Swords Dance to double its damage output , Garchomp defines team building in Platinum.
2. Infernape
The Chimchar line is generally considered the best starter choice. Fire/Fighting typing handles Steel and Ice types that dominate Sinnoh’s late game. With 104 Attack, 104 Special Attack, and blistering 108 Speed , Infernape is a mixed attacker that can strike first against most threats. Platinum’s expanded movepool gives it even more coverage options.
3. Staraptor
Starly is available immediately on Route 201 and evolves into one of the best regional birds in the series. Staraptor has 102 Attack and 100 Speed , and learns powerful moves like Close Combat and Brave Bird through level-up. It’s fast, strong, and stays relevant throughout the entire game.
4. Gyarados
Magikarp is available early via the Old Rod or Good Rod, and the payoff is enormous. Once it evolves, Gyarados has high Attack, great bulk, and Intimidate to weaken physical opponents. It learns Dragon Dance, Ice Fang, and Aqua Tail by level-up, making it a devastating sweeper against the Elite Four and Cynthia. Many consider it the best Water-type for Sinnoh.
5. Luxray
Shinx is available on Route 202 and evolves into a solid Electric-type with 120 Attack and Intimidate. It provides crucial coverage against the many Water and Flying types you’ll face. Its high Attack stat means even non-STAB moves hit hard.
6. Lucario
Riolu is received as an egg from Riley on Iron Island. Once evolved, Lucario’s Fighting/Steel typing offers excellent resistances, and its access to Swords Dance and priority moves like Bullet Punch makes it a dangerous attacker. A special set with Aura Sphere is also viable.
7. Togekiss
Togepi (the egg from Cynthia’s grandmother) evolves into Togekiss with a Shiny Stone. It has exceptional Special Attack and bulk, and its Serene Grace ability makes moves like Air Slash and Thunder Wave extremely reliable. It’s a versatile special attacker that can also provide team support.
8. Roserade
Budew is available early on Route 204. With a high Special Attack stat, access to powerful Grass and Poison STAB moves, and the ability to set up Toxic Spikes , Roserade is an excellent special attacker that can also provide team utility. It’s especially useful against the many Water and Ground types in Sinnoh.
9. Houndoom
If you didn’t pick Chimchar, Houndour (available in the mid-game) is your answer to Sinnoh’s Fire-type shortage. With high Special Attack and Speed, Houndoom hits hard and its Dark typing provides crucial coverage against Ghost and Psychic types.
10. Giratina
While it’s available late (level 47 in the Distortion World), Giratina is a monstrous addition to any team. Its 150 HP and 120 in both defenses make it an incredible wall, while its Origin Forme trades bulk for offensive power. It has 680 total base stats and can easily carry you through the Elite Four.
Honorable Mentions: Rotom (great typing and utility), Magnemite/Magnezone (excellent defensive typing), Weavile (high Attack and Speed, Ice Shard priority), and Froslass (fast, useful Ice typing for Cynthia’s Garchomp).
